Laconia, Snoqualmie Pass, Washington

This scene of Laconia, which was located at the
summit of Snoqualmie Pass, was photographed in about 1915. In 1905, the wagon route over
Snoqualmie Pass was designated as State Road No. 7. In 1913, the State road numbering system
was discontinued and the route over Snoqualmie Pass was designated as the Sunset Highway.
In 1914, construction began to improve the route over Snoqualmie Pass to make the route more
suitable for automobile use. The improved Sunset Highway was dedicated by Governor Ernest
Lister at Snoqualmie Pass on July 1, 1915. In 1923, the Sunset Highway was renumbered as State
Road No. 2. In 1926, the Sunset Highway (State Road No. 2) became part of U.S. Highway 10.
This scene is looking northwest down the original Sunset Highway toward Denny Mountain, which
is the mountain visible in the background of this photograph. The railroad tracks shown in the
previous scene were located on the opposite side of the buildings shown on the left side of this
photograph. Several of the same buildings are visible in both photographs.
